Jules Simonneau explains how a focused facial can give you a boost
We were never meant to see our faces as often as we do. With front-facing cameras, Zoom calls, and social media, we’re constantly confronted with our reflection. It’s no surprise we’ve become hyper-aware of every line, blemish and shadow. Meanwhile, the beauty industry races to sell the next miracle serum and is now even marketing expensive anti-ageing products to children, even though these harsh ingredients can damage their young, still-developing skin barrier.

It is hard to avoid the current societal pressures we face. But what if there were another way to care for your skin? One that supports your body, calms your mind, and brings out a natural, healthy glow from within?
Facial acupuncture is just that. And it’s not only about vanity or surface-level glow (though you’ll likely get that too). It’s a deeply therapeutic, natural and holistic treatment that supports skin health, emotional well-being and whole-body balance. Whether you’re dealing with breakouts, jaw pain or the early signs of ageing, facial acupuncture is for everyone – men and women alike, who want to look and feel their best without harsh chemicals or invasive procedures.
Acupuncture has been practised for thousands of years, rooted in traditional Chinese medicine with a focus on restoring harmony and balance in the body. While many people are familiar with acupuncture for back pain or stress, fewer know that the face holds the most concentrated number of acupuncture points in the body. That means facial acupuncture isn’t just a beauty treatment. It’s a powerful way to support overall well-being, from calming the nervous system to improving digestion and hormone regulation, which in turn reflects visibly on the skin.
Facial acupuncture isn’t just about tiny needles either. Treatments often include facial cupping and gua sha massage to lift and sculpt, as well as red light therapy, which stimulates collagen and reduces inflammation, and blue light therapy, known for its antibacterial properties that calm acne-prone skin. These techniques boost circulation, improve lymphatic drainage, soften tension in the jaw and forehead and give the skin a fresh, radiant glow naturally.
Facial acupuncture is also a particularly supportive treatment for tired mothers, especially those navigating the physical and emotional demands of early motherhood, disrupted sleep and depleted energy reserves. In Chinese medicine, these experiences are seen as creating imbalances in Qi, Blood and Yin, all of which can manifest on the face as dullness, puffiness, or premature lines.
By gently stimulating facial points while supporting the body’s internal organs and meridian pathways, facial acupuncture helps restore vitality from the inside out. It offers a precious pause, a chance to deeply rest, reset the nervous system and reconnect with oneself.
And the care doesn’t stop at the treatment table. I offer personalised dietary and lifestyle advice grounded in Chinese medicine principles, helping you build small, nourishing habits that support your skin, sleep and emotional wellbeing long after the session ends.
So how does it work, scientifically? When fine needles are placed in the face, they create what’s known as a micro-trauma. This signals the body to send fresh oxygenated blood to the area, which stimulates fibroblast cells responsible for producing collagen and elastin. This is why people often notice firmer, plumper and smoother skin over the course of treatments.
Enhanced circulation also delivers nutrients more efficiently to skin cells, supporting cell turnover and healing. For acne, this increased flow reduces inflammation, flushes toxins and regulates sebum production, all while calming the nervous system. The result is skin that not only looks healthier but truly is healthier.
Facial acupuncture can help with a wide range of concerns, including:
• Fine lines and wrinkles
• Acne and breakouts
• Rosacea and skin sensitivity
• Puffiness and under-eye bags
• TMJ (jaw tension) and teeth grinding
• Sinus issues and congestion
• Headaches and migraines
• Stress, anxiety and insomnia
My own journey into facial acupuncture began after I broke my jaw. The recovery process was painful and I was dealing with persistent tension and deep discomfort in my face and teeth. Conventional treatments didn’t offer much relief. That’s when I turned to acupuncture, and it was transformative, even for the persistent toothache. Not only did the pain ease dramatically, but I also began to notice how much calmer and more connected I felt in myself. It helped with more than just physical pain, it brought me a sense of balance.
That experience was the catalyst for what became a deep passion and a professional path. Today, I run my acupuncture clinic in a quiet garden setting in Tufnell Park, where I treat people from all walks of life with a combination of traditional acupuncture and modern facial therapies. Many of my clients come in for cosmetic reasons but leave feeling lighter, more grounded and sleeping better. Others start with pain relief for issues such as migraines, jaw pain or toothache and find the added benefits of a brighter, calmer face in the mirror.
It is not just for women. I treat a lot of male patients who are discovering the benefits too. Whether it’s easing tension from clenched jaws, reducing redness and inflammation from shaving and stress, or addressing fine lines and dark circles, facial acupuncture works just as effectively for male skin. In fact, it often responds quickly to these treatments thanks to higher collagen density (lucky them!).
If you’re curious and wondering whether facial acupuncture could help you with clearer skin, softer lines, jaw pain relief or simply feel more like yourself again, it is something I definitely recommend.
